ALT's Annual Appeal

Consider giving to ALT's Annual
Appeal or becoming a member! The general operating funds derived
from these two initiatives are crucial to help us continue to move
our time-sensitive mission forward!
ALT has worked to conserve over 2,400 acres of land that is crucial
to ensure safe drinking water, prime USDA farmland, wildlife
habitats for endangered species, scenic vistas on historic corridors
and recreational areas for our community to thrive in. Over the last
several years we have also created a 10-mile nature trail that is
free and open to the community. These projects are the core of what
helps to make Aquidneck Island an amazing place to live and visit.

Merritt Neighborhood Fund 2014 Grant Applications are
Available Now!
The Merritt Neighborhood Fund was
established in 1999 by the Aquidneck Land Trust to honor the late
Peter M. Merritt, the organization's visionary president emeritus,
for his decade of leadership. Peter had a vision to someday execute
the mission of the Land Trust on a smaller scale to benefit
individual neighborhoods across Aquidneck Island. The work of
neighborhood groups and associations to reclaim small parcels for
community good and serve as environmental stewardship role models is
vital to Aquidneck Island's future.
The purpose of the Fund is to provide modest grants to Aquidneck
Island's neighborhood and community groups to support their
preservation of small parks, playgrounds, and other natural spaces
in order to strengthen their community's identity and character and
to model the ethic of land conservation and stewardship through
community volunteerism. We especially encourage community gardens
applications. Some past funded projects have included (but are not
limited to): the Friendship Garden at the Edward King House, the
green house at the Methodist Community Gardens, beautification of
the playground in Island Park, landscaping at the Potter League, and
tree planting for the Off Broadway Neighborhood Association.
If you think you have a project that is in line with the Merritt
Neighborhood Fund, feel free to download and application HERE and apply.
Deadline for submissions is April 1, 2014.

ALT Loves Our New Board Members!
This Valentine's Day we're happy to announce that we're in love ...
with our volunteers, supporters, donors, Aquidneck Island and YOU! The support we receive from the community is what makes it possible
for us to reach our goals and move forward with our time-sensitive
mission! We love our volunteers and would like to take the
time to introduce you to five new members of ALT's Board of
Trustees.

Emlen Drayton is a science

found emceeing local charitable events.

Jonathan Gewirz is a long-time
supporter of land conservation on Aquidneck Island and owner of
Grindstone Productions, an artist's studio and creative group in
Pawtucket. He lives in Providence most of the year, spending summers
all over Newport County, both on land and on the water. A former
board member, he is rejoining the Board and bringing his expertise
to the Board Governance Committee.

Nancy Jamison retired from a
career in the marketing, financial services, and payment systems
industries in San Francisco and moved to Rhode Island to pursue a
degree in Marine Affairs at URI. Nancy then settled on Aquidneck
Island following a year-long fellowship at the U.S. State
Department's Office of Marine Conservation. An avid scuba diver,
sailor, and contributor to various conservation organizations, she
joins the ALT Board while continuing her participation on the
Advancement Committee.

Stephen MacGillivray, a former
ALT Trustee and Chair Emeritus, is rejoining the Board after a 4
